VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT FOR FEBRUARY OF 2021

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT FOR FEBRUARY IS ROGER MILLER!

*The following write-up/picture is the latest edition of our monthly volunteer spotlight of volunteers in the Westfield Rec. Dept. We are blessed in the Rec. Dept. to have so many wonderful people who volunteer their time both now and over the years to make our department and programs/events what they are today. We want to say thank you! To nominate someone for volunteer spotlight, please send us a private message on Facebook or call/text Andrew at 753-6842.

Our volunteer spotlight for February is Roger Miller, better known as “Coach Roger or Coach Miller” by the many athletes he has coached. Roger has been coaching in our youth basketball program for the last 11 years. For several years, he ran our 1st and 2nd grades’ youth basketball clinic. It was a joy to watch him coach the basics of basketball to so many young children who had never played before. In more recent years, he has been one of our main girls’ coaches in our youth basketball program. Even though his children are too old to participate in our program, Roger is still donating his time to coach this season in our basketball clinics. He is truly one of the best coaches we have had the pleasure of having in our youth programs.

In addition to coaching youth basketball, Roger has also served on our Rec. Commission over the last couple of years as well as helped with the Tour of Chautauqua Bike Ride. He has also donated his time on various projects at Welch Field over the last couple of years. As a contractor, he has a unique skill set that has really benefited our various facilities. Outside of the Rec. Dept, Roger has coached little league baseball and softball, as well as Goldenhawks youth football. He previously served as the President of the Westfield Little League where he worked in partnership with the Rec. Dept. to make various improvements to our Welch Field ball fields. As far as the Rec. Dept. goes, coaching youth basketball has been his favorite program. “It’s been fun watching the boys and girls and being involved with them when they are first starting out and seeing where they are at now, as they all are getting ready to graduate in the next year or so (Roger’s son is in the 11th grade at CLCS).”

Volunteering is something that Roger has grown up doing and has always been a part of his life. “That’s how I was raised. My dad volunteered for everything, so that’s how I was raised, and I push it forward.” Roger said. Pushing it forward he has and beyond. I had the pleasure of knowing Roger’s father, the late Bob Miller, and he was an absolute joy to be around as well as a highly successful youth sports’ coach. Roger is certainly making his father and community proud. Not only is he following hid dad’s footsteps in volunteering and coaching, but he truly is a great man, husband, and father and a fantastic role model to so many young people both past and present. We are certainly fortunate to have had and to continue to have Roger serving as a volunteer in our Rec. Dept. programs. Both us and the community of Westfield are so much better for it.
